Richard Eugene Johnson Jr. was born on March 31, 1930 at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey to the late Reverend Richard Eugene Johnson Sr. and Althea Rice-Johnson. He departed this life on March 30, 2021 at the age of 90. He grew up in Paulsboro, New Jersey and attended Bethel AME Church where his father was pastor.

 

Richard was raised on West Adams Street, in Paulsboro, New Jersey, where he was the eldest of four brothers and a sister. He attended the Paulsboro School District and graduated from Paulsboro High School in 1948. He played the saxophone in the high school band and participated on the track team. Upon graduating, he was employed at the Mobil Oil Refinery in Paulsboro. He then served 3 years in the Air Force as a dental technician in San Antonio Texas.

 

Subsequent to completing his service in the Air Force, he attended Rutgers University and secured a bachelor’s of science degree. Determined to pursue a career in dentistry, he was accepted at Howard University’s School of Dentistry. While there, he met the love of his life, Melba Loyce McNeill. They were married on April 1, 1960. Out of this union, they had three children. Richard Eugene Johnson lll, Drew McNeill Johnson, and Kimberly Carolyn (Casey) Johnson-Gilliam. Richard’s dream was to establish a dental practice in  his home town Paulsboro. Afterwards, the family relocated in 1966 from Paulsboro and settled in Willingboro, New Jersey where he resided until his death.

 

Richard was a caring, loving, and thoughtful son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and devoted husband. He had tremendous pride for each generation of his family and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

 

Richard loved to read, enjoy a good meal, and had a great sense of humor. He also was an intense listener and observer. He had the ability to engage and make you feel what you were saying was always significant.

 

Left to celebrate his homegoing is his loving wife Melba, Richard and his husband Luis, Drew and his wife Karlene and grandsons Yared and Binor, Casey and her husband Persel. He also leaves behind his sisters, Martha Chapman and Virginia Warren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

 

Dr. Richard E. Johnson Jr., of Willingboro, NJ departed this life on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. Celebration of Life will held Monday, April 5, 2021 12 PM  at the TL Hutton Family & Friends Funeral Services, 869 Beverly Road, Burlington, NJ. Family and friends may view 11 AM until time of service. NJ. Services will be live stream 12 PM at www.TLHuttonfuneralservices.com
