Corene Darden Wells
MARCH 9, 1933 - SUNSET JULY 24, 2021
Corene Darden Wells went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 24, 2021. She was born the youngest of eight children to the late Mary Alice (Parker) Darden and William Henry Darden in Lanett, Alabama.
In 1950, Corene graduated from Lanier High School in Lanett Alabama, where she was voted “most popular”. After high school, she traveled to Long Island City, NY and Fort Dix, NJ where she stayed with her sisters, Annie Ballard and Carrie Collins.
While staying with Carrie in Fort Dix, she met her husband, William (Roach) Wells.
The couple adventurously moved to Fairbanks, Alaska where she gave birth to 4 children: Hilliard Lee (Sonny), Herbert James, Katya Yvonne and Angel Lite. While in Alaska, Corene was a busy housewife raising 4 children. But she still managed to be active with the NAACP, the PTA and the University of Alaska Community Choir.
In 1964, the family moved to Mount Holly, NJ. There, she attended St. Paul United Methodist Church. Although she was always an active church member, Corene accepted Christ as her personal Savior one summer while attending an A.A. Allen tent revival meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Corene later attended The Met in Philadelphia under Pastor Thea Jones.
Corene loved driving and prided herself on being an excellent driver. She drove for The Office on Aging, Head Start, and other companies transporting disabled, pre-school and corporate clients. Corene also worked as a “Visiting Homemaker” caring for the elderly, and as cafeteria worker for the school system.
In 1989, Corene moved back home to Lanett, Alabama where she became very active in the community. There, she worked as a driver for Chambers County Human Resources. She also volunteered with the Tuskegee VA hospital driving veterans, seniors, and disabled clients to appointments. Corene became a licensed Lay-Speaker through her family church, Goodsell United Methodist Church in Lanett. She also attended Calvary Worship Center in Valley, AL where she worked diligently in the children’s ministry, food ministry, and everywhere she was needed.
Corene loved serving and helping those in need. She was a fearless fighter and a bold advocate for what she believed. She never hesitated to speak up for the underdog, minister to someone about Jesus, or offer an encouraging word.
Corene also loved plants and gardening, and had a greenhouse where she would grow and sell her plants.
A wonderful singer, Corene was always a featured soloist in most of the churches that she attended. She would visit nursing homes with her karaoke machine encouraging the residents and singing about Jesus. She was also a featured guest artist on local Alabama TV and radio programs.
Corene loved Jesus and devoted her life to Him in diligent Bible study, singing, and serving.
Her last 2 ½ years were spent at Riverview Estates in Riverton, NJ where she was known for her singing and words of encouragement.
Corene is preceded in death by her husband William (Roach) Wells, her sisters: Carrie Mae Darden (Collins), Annie Darden (Ballard), and brothers: Sid, John-Allen, Hilliard, Alfred and Horace Darden.
She leaves to cherish her memories her 4 children: Sons: Hilliard Lee (Sonny) Wells (Crystal), of California, Herbert James Wells Sr. (Joan), of North Carolina, and Daughters: Katya Yvonne Wells (Donald) Scott of New Jersey, and Angel Lite Wells (Richard) Carlos of Pennsylvania.
