"The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living"
Marcus Tullius Cicero
Our beloved mother Gertie Martin (Annabelle), was born February 14, 1928 to Thomas and Juanita (Bessy) Davis, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. She was the youngest of eight children and enjoyed spending time with her parents learning the importance of family values. As the daughter of a deacon, she established an early foundation with God, which remained present throughout her life and enjoyed fellowship and singing in the church choir. She was educated in Moncks Corner School District, where she was very popular and enjoyed spending time with her classmates.
In 1944, Gertie met the love of her life, Nelson Martin who she married soon after on November
24, 1945 in Charleston, SC. During their early years of marriage, Nelson and Gertie lived in Charleston, SC building the foundation for their future. In 1952, they moved up north to West Philadelphia on Wanamaker Street. They were very generous and opened up their home to support family members from the South. After 10 years of marriage, they were blessed with 7 children and in 1967, moved to Willingboro, NJ to raise their family.
Gertie’s pride and joy was her family, which included caring for her husband, attending her children’s activities, and taking family trips. She was employed by the Willingboro Board of Education for more than 25 years in various capacities and was well liked by the faculty and students. This admiration extended beyond her work, as both Nelson and Gertie were well respected and known for their active involvement in community activities.
Nelson and Gertie held the key to a successful marriage and in September 2020 they were recognized and honored for their 75 years of marriage in the Burlington County Times Newspaper. Gertie was a devoted wife, loving mother, and adored grandmother. She exhibited excellence in her cooking, which was heavily influenced by southern cuisine. She also had impeccable taste in fashion, jewelry, and home decor. In her spare time, she enjoyed shopping, watching soap operas and taking yearly vacations with her husband.
On May 31, she transitioned from earth to glory. She was preceded in death by seven siblings and her eldest son, Nelson Earl Martin. She is survived by her husband Nelson Martin, children Christopher Nelson (Violet), Tony (LaCrece), Stacey, Stanley (Deidra), Kimberly (Anthony) Talley, Carlton (Melanie), daughter in-law Pamela, 20 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.
Lovingly submitted, the family.
