Gladys Lovetta Stargell
Gladys Lovetta Stargell was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 27, 1944 to the late Rev. Alvin Stargell and Deloree Stargell. She was the 2nd of 8 children, which included 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Gladys transitioned from this earth surrounded by family on Saturday, November 27, 2021.
Gladys often spoke fondly of her childhood and told stories of growing up in Rahway, NJ. She matriculated through the Rahway school system, graduating from Rahway High School in 1962. She immediately began working for RCA factory, though she later attended Rutgers University in Camden, and achieved a bachelors degree in Social Work in 1983.
Before moving to Willingboro, NJ in the 1970s, Gladys lived in Detroit, MI for four years in the late 1960s. While living in Willingboro and between raising her 4 children, creating a welcome and comfortable home and exciting everyone with her fashion sense, Gladys worked as a substitute teacher in the 1980s and then as a bookkeeper for United Stationers in Pennsauken, NJ from 1989-1992.
After a brief move to Delray Beach, Florida in 1995, and Riverdale, Georgia from 1997 to 2002, Gladys returned to New Jersey to be closer to family. And this is where she thrived; assisting family, raising grandchildren and maintaining connections with her siblings and extended family. Gladys ended her “working career” as a constant help and much-loved fixture of her daughter’s successful hair salon and boutique in Edgewater Park, NJ. Whenever she entered “the Shop”, and whenever she went, her light drew others in and warmed them.
Gladys always loved the Lord and she joined the Word Christian Center in Burlington, NJ in 1994 under the leadership of Pastor James Hicks and First Lady Marie Hicks. She enjoyed the fellowship, worship and The Word, sang with the Judah Worship Team and served on the Usher Board for many years, always being of service. Until her passing, Gladys remained a devoted member of Word Christian Center, now shepherded under Pastor Nolan Branch and First Lady Deborahe Branch, who she loved dearly.
Gladys was a loving mother and grandmother, dedicated sister, and loyal friend. She is survived by her children, Christopher(Vanessa), Jennifer, Tyra, and Tyrone Jr. (Alicia); grandchildren Yasmine, Tai, Lily, Samaya, Taj, Chris Jr., and Laila. Gladys also leaves behind her 7 siblings, and a host of nieces and nephews, grand nieces, nephews and cousins.
