Gladys Wilson

On April 15, 1947, Gladys Wilson was born to the late William Henry Tolliver and Mary Ann Gunter Tolliver in Belle Haven, Virginia. She was the youngest of eight siblings: William, Flora, Naomi, Iona, Ruell, Atoria, Melvin, and Gladys. Our servant of God was peacefully called to Glory on Sunday, October 10, 2021, at 12:08 P.M. 

 

Gladys accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour at the of thirteen. She was baptized in the river at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Exmore, Virginia, under the spiritual leadership of the late Reverend Hardy. 

 

Gladys graduated from Belle Haven High School in Belle Haven, Virginia. After high school, Gladys joined the United States Army. She served from 1966-1969 with an honorable discharge. After her honorable discharge, she was employed at the US Post office in Manhattan, NY. After a year, she returned to the US Army from 1970-1971 and retired as an E-5 Specialist. Gladys was married to her soul mate Benjamin Alphonso Wilson, Jr. on December 5, 1970, at Jones Methodist Church in San Francisco, California. This union of almost 51 years was blessed with love and happiness. The Lord blessed their marriage with a son Benjamin Alphonso Wilson, III. Gladys applied to Rutgers University Livingston College of New Brunswick, NJ.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a minor in Business Administration on June 2, 1977. 

 

Gladys was employed at Ford Motor Co Edison, NJ as a production supervisor; Pepsi Cola in Philadelphia, Pa; E. R. Squibb & Sons Pharmaceutical in New Brunswick, NJ; Progresso Quality Foods Vineland NJ. In 1988, Gladys took a test for the Federal government. She was hired as a Contract Specialist for the Department of Defense Logistics Agency, where she retired in 2008. 

 

Gladys enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean, China, Europe, and Mexico. Gladys' family moved to Willingboro in 1978, then later moved to Mt. Laurel, NJ, in 1986. Gladys' hobbies included quilting, gardening, nature, outdoors, traveling, serving others, and she is honored to be a veteran. She enjoys spending time with her son Benjamin's family. Gladys’ pride and joy are her two grandson's Mason and Ethan. 

 

Gladys' spiritual walk continued at Second Baptist Church in Moorestown, NJ, where she served for many years. She lived her life through her favorite scripture, the 23rd Psalm. Gladys served with dedication and faithfulness as a member of the Education Committee, Women's ministry, Vacation Bible School teacher, Pulpit Search Committee, and as Chairperson of several Veterans Observance services. She attended Women's Bible Study and Adult Sunday Class until her health prohibited her from doing so. She had a gift for hospitality at many Church picnics, Women's Day afternoon fellowship meals, Student & Parent Recognition receptions, and Father's Day breakfast. 

 

Gladys is survived by her husband Benjamin Alphonso Wilson, Jr. of Mt Laurel, NJ; son Benjamin Alphonso Wilson III, (daughter-in-law Jessica) of Manchester, NJ; two grandsons Mason Benjamin and Ethan Walter Wilson; a sister Atoria Washington (brother-in-law Leon) of Greensboro, NC; three sisters-in-law, Desiree George of Brooklyn, NY, Geraldine Skeete of Palm Coast, Florida and Barbara Tolliver of, Jacksonville, Florida and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
