Roland Ellis Jr., 84 years of age passed away, peacefully on Monday May 3, 2021.
Roland was born June 16, 1936 in Spartanburg, South Carolina the only child of Roland & Alice Ellis.
Roland attended Burlington High School, where he met the love of his life, Sylvia C. Ellis. On September 6, 1958 the high school sweethearts married and from their union were blessed with 2 daughters; April Michelle Ellis (deceased) and Evonne Elizabeth Ellis. Roland continued on with his education at Rider College and Mercer Community College.
Roland enlisted in the NJ National Guard in 1953 and served until 1962. In 1970, driven by his thirst for social justice, he ran and won, as the first black city councilman of Burlington City. His desire for equality spanned his professional career at AT&T as well where he helped to found the Alliance, one of the first Diversity and Inclusion efforts.
Roland was considered a natural leader and spent his 30 year career, as an engineer, for AT&T.
Roland was passionate about his community, helping others to come up and investing in the youth. He spent much of his time supporting and mentoring in the Youth Achievers Committee, by bringing them into direct contact with individuals working in Math, Science and Engineering careers.
Roland was known to pop in, stop by and chit-chat with just about everyone. He loved people and making a difference in the lives of others. Among his passions was his love for chopping wood, music and singing in the choir.
Roland was a beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather and will be missed beyond measure. You are and will always be our hero.
Roland leaves, to cherish his memory, his daughter Evonne and grandchildren Danielle and Shaina Booker along with a host of friends and loved ones. Though you are gone you are far from forgotten-your impact lives on.
Celebration of his life service will be held, Friday, May 14, 2021 11AM. A walk through viewing will be held 10AM until 11AM at the TL Hutton Family & Friends Funeral Services, 869 Beverly Road, Burlington, NJ. Interment will follow at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington, NJ. Services will be live streamed at
